Gibson F-5 Model Carved Top Mandolin , made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, serial , sunburst lacquer finish, maple back, sides and neck, spruce top, ebony fingerboard, original black hard shell case. This rarely-seen instrument was built and sold in , at the height of the swing era when interest in all mandolins was at low ebb. While 20 years earlier Gibson was a mandolin company that made guitars, by this later date the guitar was all the rage and the mandolins were built only in very small numbers.

All Gibson mandolins from this period are rare, but these very expensive F-5s were built in miniscule numbers as there was hardly any market for them. The original F-5 was Lloyd Loar’s baby in , the flagship of the Gibson “Master Model” line and at the time the most expensive and innovative mandolin in the world. Loar’s re-design of Gibson’s earlier instruments essentially invented the modern mandolin, including now taken for granted features like the adjustable bridge and truss rod neck.

It was purchased by my great-grandfather during the Depression. He purchased it from, I believe, a neighbor who at the time needed some extra money, and he wanted his son, my grandfather, to learn how to play a musical instrument. It’s the type of F-5 that’s very easy for us to identify the year from because I can tell that it’s what we call a Lloyd Loar model F-5 with this fern inlay in the peghead.

Lloyd Loar was an acoustic engineer and great mandolin virtuoso who worked at the Gibson company back in the ’10s and ’20s.

Thus, guitars were blessed with the Midas touch, veritable gold mines guaranteed to swell the bottom line as large corporations sought to diversify. The resulting gold rush yielded a number of strange bedfellows, with many guitar companies owned by conglomerates that may or may not have a clue about making and marketing guitars. Most came down on the latter side: Even new guitar importing companies were fueled by money from elsewhere: Teisco del Rey came from photographic supplies.

It was amid this corporate feeding frenzy that Baldwin guitars were born, the result of a collision between the quest for guitars and the fortunes of Burns guitars of London. If you want to know about a Burns-built guitar, you need this book. Despite the good times for guitar sellers, Burns London was in desperate need of a rescue. The Baldwin story goes back a bit further, to Cincinnati in , when a reed organ and violin teacher named Dwight Hamilton Baldwin opened a music store and eventually became one of the largest piano retailers in the Midwest.

Joining him as a bookkeeper in was Lucien Wulsin, of Alexandria, Kentucky.

Photos by William Ritter. Instrument courtesy of George Gruhn. The mandolin originated in the Middle East as a bowl-back instrument. Crusaders brought it back to Europe and early Italian builders evolved the design, giving it four paired strings tuned like a violin but with a back similar to a lute also of Arabic origin. In the mid s, Orville Gibson revolutionized mandolin design, structurally and aesthetically, by constructing instruments with carved backs and tops that were carved and arched.

By , Orville had virtually no contact with the company, the business grew rapidly and began making a variety of models.

F-Paul Gibson The Gibson Company pioneered new designs in acoustic mandolins, and also built one of the earliest and most successful mass-produced electric mandolins: EM Introduced in , this hollowbody, 8-string instrument at first featured the same “Charlie Christian” pickup used on some of Gibson’s archtop guitars, with a notch cut in the pickguard to accommodate the pickup.

See the top photo for an example. EM s built between and have a rectangular screw-pole pickup; post instruments have a “soapbar” pickup similar to the P used on the Les Paul guitar. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe these pickups are not identical to P s in that they have only four poles as opposed to six. Gibson discontinued the EM in

I finally got to it and am glad I did — it’s a fun little rig! It definitely has that bright, cutty, crunchy, bluegrass sound even with the slightly-light for its build-style 34w strings I’ve got on it. These A s are the infamous “lump scroll” design that looks like an F-style but doesn’t have the full scroll on the shoulder.

You either like them or hate them. Considering that I’m a fan of the reverse-scroll Regal mandolins , I think you know which camp I’m in. It’s a straightfoward-sounding instrument and these cost one far less than an “actual” F-style and still have the points and vibe. This one arrived in pretty good shape, though the fretboard extension ramped-up a little past the body joint and the frets were teeny-tiny. It feels like a new, boutique-style mando in the hands.

Just a note on the date for this instrument — its serial number corresponds to a ’64 build date, but traditional sources state the model was a ’70s build only. If you know for sure about the date, please let me know. I’m only familiar with the serial number and stamping scheme for Gibson guitars from this era.

The sunburst is pure, ’60s Gibson-style.

Gibson used, F-2 Mandolin Tag No Used , in very good condition, sunburst, with original hard shell case. The Gibson F-2 was one-model-under-the-top-of-the-Mandolin-line until when Gibson superseded the model above it, the F-4, with the incredibly rare F As a result, by the F-2 model was the third from the top of the line. The mandolin shows a few scratches and dings overall but not many.

There appears to be the signs of a repair due to an early most typical separation at the headstock scroll — and an equally insignificant indication of a hairline coming up from the lower treble point on the face — also typical of this model. Said lines are seen on the surface and do not appear to go all the way through.
