But, just as the appalling industrial apocalypse becomes too much to bear, new roads cut north, towards Binh Duong New City. The big distances and horizons on this vast agricultural plateau — which essentially continues all the way north beyond Kon Tum and into Laos — and the sense of space and light, are on a grander scale than one would expect in Vietnam. The smell of the rich, red earth — the soil that makes this region the agricultural bosom of Vietnam — rises with the morning mist.
Everything grows here, and it grows bigger and greener than anywhere else. The Ho Chi Minh Road — with its characteristic yellow centre-markings — glides over gentle ridges cloaked in plantations: Houses, people, vehicles, road surfaces, hillsides are all covered in a layer of red dust. The Ho Chi Minh Road, with its characteristic yellow markings, glides through the Central Highlands Gia Nghia is a large town alternately carved out of, and perched on top of, the red-soiled hillsides.
Pleasant in the sunshine, grim in the rain, Gia Nghia is a fascinating off-the-beaten-path place to spend a night. The old town sprawls over the first hillock as you enter town from the highway, while the new town climbs up the hill behind it. The latter has an astonishing amount of government edifices and some large, decent hotels. But the old town, especially around the crumbling market, is where all the action and life is.
The red soil — somehow deeper and earthier than previously — is a dusty plague of airborne particles, making the air thick and hazy, especially with the addition of smoke from burning fields and exhaust fumes from passing trucks.

Backgrounds[ edit ] South Australian bushfires[ edit ] On Ash Wednesday in during a virtually rainless summer after a very wet spring in , bushfires swept through the Adelaide Hills in South Australia, destroying 51 houses. In many places, rainfall over winter and spring had been as little as half the previous record low in a record dating back to the s and severe water restrictions were imposed in Melbourne in November.
The first week of February was punctuated by intense heat, with record high temperatures experienced on 1 and 8 February. This combination further destabilised an already volatile fire situation in the forested upland areas surrounding the Victorian and South Australian capitals of Melbourne and Adelaide. Early fire season[ edit ] Victorian Government firefighting agencies employed extra staff and organised for additional equipment and aircraft to be ready for firefighting over the summer.
The first big bushfire occurred on 25 November and was followed by large fires on 3 and 13 December Even before 16 February, fires were already causing destruction in Victoria. An ongoing fire near Cann River in the state’s east had been burning uncontrolled for almost a month. Prior to that, a major bushfire on 8 January had taken hold north of Bacchus Marsh in the Wombat State Forest where two Forest Commission workers lost their lives defending Greendale.
On 1 February, a fire burnt the north face of Mount Macedon and areas of state forest. These fires were already creating a strain on firefighting resources. Melbourne dust storm An ominous sign of things to come occurred on the afternoon of 8 February, when Melbourne was enveloped by a giant dust storm. The dust cloud was over metres high and kilometres long and was composed of an estimated 50, tonnes of topsoil from the drought-ravaged Wimmera and Mallee areas of north-west Victoria.
